Historic Route

Focus on the historic attractions of the big four in the North and Harar in the East gives you opportunities of exploring mainly history and religion. Note that this route is popularly known as the historic route and the main attractions are the richest historical heritage: the Ancient city of Axum, the medieval capital of Lalibela, The historic city of Gondar, Bahir Dar and Lake Tana monasteries. DAY 1. ADDIS ABABA –BAHER DAR

DAY 2. BAHER DAR -GONDAR

Drive to Gondar and visit 17th century castles and churches. O/N hotel

DAY 3. GONDAR - LALIBELA

Fly to Lalibela and visit the incredible 13th century rock-hewn churches. O/N Hotel

DAY 4.  LALIBELA - AXUM

Fly to Axum and visit the old mysterious monolithic obelisks, ruins of queen Sheba palace, and the Archeological Museum, Kaleb’s Tomb and Tsion Mariam church where the real Ark of the Covenant is found.

DAY 5. AXUM – ADDIS ABABA

Fly back Addis Ababa, city tour Addis Ababa and departure.

HISTORIC ROUTE 7D/6N BY FLIGHT

DAY 1:- ARRIVAL ADDIS ABABA AND FLIGHT TO BAHRDAR

After arrival in Addis Ababa you take a short flight north to Bahir Dar. Upon arrival and check-out, we will transfer you to the hotel. After taking rest and having Lunch in Baherdar drive to and visit the Blue Nile water falls(smoking water 32kms far). Overnight stay Hotel in Baherdar.

DAY 2 :-BAHRDAR – GONDER (180KMS ASPHALT)

AM after break fast make a boat trip on Lake Tana to visit the island monasteries in ZegiePensulla like UraKidhaneMihret, and Azawa Mariam churches. Then after lunch in Baherdar proceed driving to Gonder a city which is considered as a “ Camelot of Africa” and famous from 17th century.  Overnight stay hotel.

3:- GONDAR - GONDAR

AM after breakfast you will pay visit to the attractive Royal Enclosures. This royal estate is characterized by its massive stone ramparts and a fascinating, dynastic series of castles, built one after the other by Ethiopian Kings. 

After lunch we will visit the church of Debreberhan Selassie (Light of the Trinity), which is located at the summit of a hill and surrounded by fortified walls. The interior is decorated with beautiful frescos. Then we will visit the bath of Fasiledes at which thousands of Ethiopian people celebrate Timket festival /Epiphany/ every January. DAY 4:- FLIGHT TO LALIBELA AND VISIT THE ROCK HEWN CHURCHES

 In the morning have a short flight to the early 12th century historical place. After arrival and check in hotel, we will visit a full of miracle and beautifully built-up-cave church(42kms) “Yemrehanekirstos Church”. 

After taking lunch in Lalibela, make a lovely excursion to the 2nd capital of Ethiopia during 12th century and which is 8th wonder of the world. You will visit the first group of rock-hewn churches. Overnight stay Hotel.

DAY 5:- LALIBELA - LALIBELA

Early morning after breakfast excursion to Asheten Mariam with panoramic view over the town by car(7kms) or Mule accompanied with trekking to the top of Asheten Mariam Monastery.

After noon excursion to the 2nd and 3rd group of rock hewn churches, the most elegant and beautiful cross-shaped church of Bet Giyorgis.Overnight stay hotel.

DAY  6 :-FLIGHT TO AXUM

In the Morning flight to Axum. After arrival and check in hotel, make excursion to the 1st century AD city of Axum, admire with historical background of Axumite kingdom and visit the old mysterious monolithic obelisks, ruins of queen Sheba palace, the Archeological Museum, and Kaleb’s Tomb. Then proceed to St.Mary Church where the real arc of the covenant is dedicated. Overnight stay hotel.

DAY 7:- FLIGHT BACK TO ADDIS ABABA AND MAKE CITY TOUR

Early morning flight to Addis Ababa. We spend the day exploring Addis Ababa beginning with a visit to the National Museum, one of the most important sub- Saharan museums in all of Africa. Then continue to visit the Ethnological Museum, which was the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie I. and presents the diversified culture and etiquettes of Ethiopian people.

After noon shopping and visit Markato the biggest open/air market in Africa. Then transfer out to Bole International airport for departure home.

DAY 1. ADDIS ABABA - ADDIS ABEBA

AM arrival Addis Ababa meet the guide and check in Hotel, this time make yourself acclimatized to the local weather. Then After lunch make an excursion in the capital city. Like national museums(home of Lucy), ethnographic Museum an ideal place to start learning about Ethiopia’s rich ethnic diversity, and Trinity cathedral Church in Addis Ababa the largest and most revered of all the churches. The church is the single European Baroque style in Africa and place where is buried the last Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. Overnight stay hotel.

DAY 2. ADDIS ABEBA – BAHERDAR(565KMS ASPHALT)

AM after early breakfast make your morning tripe to the northern part of Ethiopia, Baherdaralong the rolling plains of shoa. En route visit to the 13th century Monastery of Debre-Lebanos, then continue driving to encounter the breath taking Blue-Nile gorge(1000M deep).  Overnight stay hotel.

DAY 3.  BAHERDAR - BAHERDAR

AM After Breakfast make boat tripe on Lake Tana to visit the 12th, 13th  and 14th  century churches and monasteries in Zege Penisula which are called to be Azwa Mariam, Ura Kidanemehret (Most decorated)  and the nearest Island of Intos Iyesus(Land of Juses) where you meet monks, living detached from society. You will come back to the city for lunch and proceed driving to the Blue Nile falls (Tisesat/Smoking water in Amharic language), which is found in 32 km away from the city, to visit the astonishing nature of  longest river in the world(Nile river). Then come back to the city for overnight stay hotel.

DAY 4. BAHER DAR - GONDAR (180kms Asphalt)

Am after having breakfast make your way to visit Gonder a city which is considered as a “ Camelot of Africa” and famous from 17th century. You will visit the castles which is built by several generations of Ethiopian kings, the Debre Berhan selassie church with beautiful paintings of angelic ceilings and the bath of Fasiledes at which thousands of Ethiopian people celebrate Timket festival /Epiphany/ every January. Overnight stay hotel.

DAY 5. GONDER - SEMEIN MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK(100kms

Asphalt takes 2-3hrs ) UNESCO REGISTERD SITE AS WORLD HERITAGE

Am after breakfast and having lunch box, drive to Debark where Simein mountain National park head quarter is located. Here we obtain a permit to make excursion to Semien mountains national park known as "roof of Africa". Drive through the rough road for an hour to Senkaber, leave the car a few kms before the camp to visit the panoramic view and wild wonders of the area. Besides you will spot Gelada Baboons for the first time also known as the bleeding heart baboon due to the red patch of skin on its chest. Overnight camping at Senkaber(3250mASL).

DAY 6. SENKABER - GEECH(5-7hrs, 10kms)

Early morning go for an easy hike to Geech Abyss, where you will see a large waterfall in which the Jinbar River plunges about 500m in to the Abyss. This area is also great place for spotting the endemic Gelada baboon, has best views of the mountains and is characterized by giant Lobelia plants. En route you can have a coffee ceremony in one of the house hold. On late afternoon you will have short hike up to Kedadit summit which also provides one of the best place to see the sun set and gorgeous shaded landscapes down to the cliff side towards to the Eastern direction and return to the camp for dinner. After a short walk from Geech village, overnight camping at Geech camp site(3600M asl).

DAY 7. GEECH - IMET GOGO(3926m ASL) - GEECH(5-6hrs)

Trekking from Geech to Imet Gogo which is the best view point in the Semein mountain. This walk is a relatively easy one geared to help the acclimatization process while allowing us to enjoy some truly dramatic views. From Imet Gogo the vast area of the low lands are revealed below us and we gain some perspective of this incredible mountain ranges. Then trek back to Geech for overnight stay in the camp.

DAY 8. GEECH - CHENEK(7-8hrs)

Early morning you start trekking to Chenek appreciating the Semein mountain scenery and the different afro-alpine plant species, where you will have opportunities to admire the local wild life. Overnight camping at Chenek.

DAY 9. CHENEK - DEBARK – AXUM( AROUND 240kms)

Am/Early mornings the car will came to you and proceed driving to Axum via the mountainous region of wild beauty. En-route enjoys with the scenic view of Limalimo and the Tekeze valleys. Overnight stay hotel.

DAY 10. AXUM - AXUM

Early morning make excursion to the 1st century AD city of Axum( the source of the ancient Ethiopian civilization and the holiest place of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity)and visit the St.Mary Church where the real arch of the covenant is dedicated, the old mysterious monolithic obelisks, ruins of queen Sheba palace, the Archeological Museum, and Kaleb’s Tomb. Overnight stay hotel.

DAY 11:- AXUM -  GHERALTA CLUSTER ROCK HEWN CHURCHES

Early morning drive to Gheralta/Hawzein.  En route visit the 5th century Temple of Yeha (the birth place of Ethiopia’s earliest civilizations) and it is called yaha pre-Christian temple (temple of the moon).De-route visit Debredamo monastery built during Axumit periods and only men can enter by climbing with ropes for 16 meters. Overnight stay hotel.

DAY 12:- FULL DAY GHERALTA

Full day visit of Gheralta cluster rock hewn churches. AM visit the churches of Marriam Korekor &  Abune Daniel. PM visit Dugum Selassie church. Overnight stay hotel.

DAY 13:- GHERALTA - MEKELLE

AM drive to Mekelle, en route visit some of more rock hewn churches such as the 4th _century Abraha we Atsebaha  and wukro cherkose churches. Overnight stay hotels.

DAY 14. MEKELE - LALIBELA

Drive to Lalibela enjoying the Kobo Chain of Mountains and the spectacular view of the landscape. Transfer hotel for overnight stay.

DAY 15. LALIBELA - LALIBEL

DAY 18.  KOMBOLCHA - ADDIS ABEBA

Drive to Addis, on the way visit Zinjero Gedel where you will spot Gilada baboon for the 2nd time. Finally get back to Addis Ababa, fare well dinner party in a traditional restaurant with various tribal dances. Finally transfer out to Bole International airport for departure home.

Finally come back to Debark for overnight stay in hotel.

DAY 6:- DEBARK – AXUM(240KMS)

DAY 2. ADDIS ABABA - AWASH NATIONAL PARK(120kms asphalt)

Early morning drive to Awash national park which is first national park in Ethiopia, after arrival and check in hotel, you will make an excursion in Awash National park, spotting various wild lives, various specious of birds and enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Awash fall/gorge. This park is most preferred site for bird watching.Over night stay hotel.

DAY 3 – AWASH NATIONAL PARK - HARAR   

Early morning have your picnic breakfast and make a short visit Fentale hot spring and some endemic animals.  Then continue driving to Harar, the medieval walled city, and a place where you will see unspoiled living culture and witness the harmonious way of life. It is considered to be the 4th most sacred/holy center of Islamic world next to Mecca Medina and Jerusalem. It has been a place of pilgrimage from all over the world for many years up to now.

After arrival check in hotel and take rest, at night attend the hyena feeding ceremony (you can try it). Over nightstay hotel.

DAY 4. HARRAR - HARAR

After breakfast make a fascinating city tour in the historic city of Harrar. You will visit a walled down town of Jegol where different special markets(Jewellery shop, spices market, megalo gudo market (center for beautiful baskets of woven grass, decorative wall-mats and bright shawls & fruits and vegetables). The next stop will be the fully restored Rimbaud house (a French poet), Harari traditional houses (which are beautifully decorated) and the gets of the city, cultural life of Harari people and other historic attractions can be spotted. Over night stay hotel.

DAY 5- HARRAR – ADDIS ABABA(flight is also possible)

Early in the morning drive to Dire dawa, visit the Ethio – Djibouti rail way and 20th century artichetures (French). Then flight to Addis Ababa after arrival shopping, and fare well dinner in the traditional restaurant with a beautiful cultural dances from different tribes until transferred out to Bole international airport.
