Lalibela is about 642kms from Addis Ababa, Following the dawn fall of Axum the seat of the imperial capital and power was shifted once again to the southern part of the empire known as Roha (Lalibela) situated at about 2630m above sea level in rugged mountains in Wollo region.The founder of this dynasty is the Zagwe originated from Lastaregion in Wollo and ruled between the 11th and 13th centuries.Lalibela is internationally renowned for its rock-hewn churches which are sometimes called the “Eight Wonder of the world”. The rock hewn churches are fine products of human cleverness carved 800 years ago, and are enduring testaments of their rich legacy of the church. The holy cityLalibela has 11 remarkable rock-hewn(most of them are monolithic) churches, believed to have been built by king Lalibela in the late 12th up to early 13th century.The eleven magnificent rock hewn churches which are BeteMedhanialem, Bete Mariam, BeteMeskel, BeteDanaghel, BeteMika`el(also Known as BeteDebresina-BeteGologota), BeteGiyorgis(the most elegantand beautiful cross-shaped church ), BeteGebriel, BeteRufa`el, BeteMerkorios, BeteAmanuel, and Bete Abba Libanos. These notable structures are curved from the rock in which they stand, inside and outside the red solid volcanic rock. Each building is architecturally unique, each reflects beautifully executed craftsmanship, and several are decorated with fascinating paintings. These astonishing edifices remain places of living worship to this day.
